Cleaning product ingredients in Europe Human and Environmental Risk Assessment HERA : heraproject evaluations of "High Production Volume Chemicals" in the United States and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD assessments of flavors, fragrances, and colorants by European and U.S. cosmetic products associations; work in Canada to implement renewed chemicals legislation; the promotion of risk assessment via the U.S. Alliance For Chemical Awareness : chemicalawareness ; and the American Chemistry Council; and development of a targeted risk assessment approach in Europe, via the European Center for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals ECETOC ; , an industrysponsored research organization : ecetoc ; . In addition, we are actively promoting the responsible production and use of chemical products, and better information sharing with the public. For example, we are working with the European soap and detergent industry association AISE ; to provide consumer guidance on how to use detergents properly Wash Right Program ; , as well as formulation improvements. Last year, we launched a P&G Internet site : scienceinthebox ; to help inform consumers and stakeholders about the science and safety behind our European cleaning products. This site is receiving over 10, 000 hits monthly, and we are exploring how it might be expanded. From a policy standpoint, we continue to believe that chemicals management programs should be based on: 1. Efficient risk-based priority-setting processes that use hazard data and basic exposure information together to identify issues of potential concern, followed by practical risk evaluations that analyze chemicals in a tiered fashion to resolve such issues. 2. Risk management decision-making that combines information on a chemical's risks, benefits, and costs with an understanding of societal concerns; the risks, benefits, and costs of alternatives; and the use of appropriate precautionary measures. 3. Communications that provide meaningful and relevant safety information to stakeholders, such that they can make knowledgeable decisions. These policies are the foundation of what we do internally, as well as what we promote across government and industry. Internally, they are enabled by collaboration between Research & Development, Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs, Manufacturing, External Relations, and management. Our efforts also often go beyond safety and risk to include product lifecycle issues such as energy and resources use and waste management. Collectively, we believe these activities and policies enable continued progress toward sustainability and enable us to provide safe, effective products that improve lives.

K88 W. Haverkamp et al. is taking a potassium-wasting diuretic. In addition, the patient should be warned of the potential problems associated with the use of the drug. It has been suggested that a card listing risk factors including other agents that prolong the QT interval ; , precautions and contraindications for co-prescription should be given to the patient. Class D agents appear to be relatively safe. However, if symptoms such as dizziness and syncope due to TdP appear, a causative role should be considered. Even these agents should be avoided in patients who can be considered to be at high risk for drug-induced TdP i.e. patients with congenital long QT syndrome or patients with a history of drug-induced TdP in the absence of a congenital QT syndrome and pulmicort.

Our present understanding of membrane potentials and nerve impulses rests on a body of research carried out on the giant axons of the squid in the late 1940s and early 1950s by a group of British physiologists, most notably Alan Hodgkin, Andrew Huxley, and Bernard Katz. These axons, which are approximately 1 mm in diameter, carry impulses at high speeds, enabling the squid to escape rapidly from predators. If the membrane of a resting squid axon is stimulated by poking it with a fine needle or jolting it with a very small electric current, some of its sodium channels open, allowing a limited number of sodium ions to diffuse into the cell. This opportunity for positively charged ions to move into the cell reduces the membrane potential, making it less negative. Because the positive change in membrane voltage causes a decrease in the polarity between the two sides of the membrane, it is called a depolarization. If the stimulus causes the membrane to depolarize by only a few millivolts, say from 70 to 60 mV, the membrane rapidly returns to its resting potential as soon as the stimulus has ceased Figure 4.51a, left box ; . If, however, the stimulus depolarizes the membrane beyond a certain!

What could go wrong for 3TC? We believe the future royalty revenues from 3TC sales represent a lowrisk, high-probability stream of cash flow for Biochem Pharma. Nevertheless, we list here several scenarios that could undermine 3TC's future performance, even though the likelihood for any of them to become a significant concern is minimal. Serious drug resistance problem. This is an adverse event that could happen to any drug, including 3TC. However, we see very little chance for it to be major issue within the next five years, considering that 3TC is primarily used in combination with other NRTIs and protease inhibitors. Beyond this period it is harder to predict. Some other NRTIs with better efficacy and safety profile taking over 3TC's place. Glaxo's 1592U89 abacavir ; , which has been shown to be among the most potent HIV drugs tested to date and is expected to debut later this year, originally raised speculation that it might be a category killer, replacing existing NRTIs or even protease inhibitors. But more recent data indicate that it will unlikely be such a magic bullet. Furthermore, Glaxo appears to position the drug more as a possible replacement in combination therapies for a protease inhibitor than for 3TC, a perfectly understandable move given Glaxo's weaker presence in protease inhibitors. And finally, patent infringement lawsuit by Emory University deemed by court to be valid. A long shot perhaps, but certainly something investors should keep in mind. Lamivudine will likely become Biochem Pharma's next blockbuster drug for Hepatitis B. It is estimated that 300-350MM people worldwide have chronic Hepatitis B infection, the majority in Asia. Chronic infection leads to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, resulting in 1-2 million deaths annually and making HBV the tenth leading cause of death worldwide. At present the only widely approved drug for Hepatitis B is alpha-interferon, marketed mainly by Schering-Plough and Roche. Zaidaxin, a drug developed by SciClone Pharmaceuticals SCLN ; , a small biotech firm in California, has been approved in China and some other Asian countries, but has not done well in sales. Both drugs work by stimulating the body's immune system, eventually leading to suppression of viral replication. Both suffer from limited efficacy, need for frequent injection they are peptides in nature and neither can be taken orally ; , and high cost annual cost for each patient was reportedly at between , 000 and , 000 ; . In addition, alpha-interferon has fairly severe side effects. These factors have limited alpha-interferon's penetration of the HBV market, to perhaps 5% of the patients in the US and even lower percentage in the rest of the world. Biochem Pharma has developed Lamivudine, a different version of 3TC, for Hepatitis B. Several clinical trials, including a pivotal Phase III trial conducted in Asia, have shown good efficacy as well as an excellent safety profile. Lamivudine monotherapy over a one-year period improved liver histology in a significantly higher percentage of treated patients than in placebo. Moreover, significantly more patients with lamivudine treatment underwent seroconversion, a much-desired clinical end-point for Hepatitis B.

A survey of National Members shows that very few National Members have figures on the amount of cases referred to the EJN from Eurojust and vice-versa. Furthermore, very few National Members have figures on cases that EJN contact points deal with on a domestic level, while only roughly one-third of the National Members consider the retrieval of such figures to be possible, one reason being that many EJN contact points are placed at central authorities, and it is not possible to separate cases they deal with in their capacity as EJN contact points. Eurojust does not consider it possible to define strict criteria or mechanical formulae that make it possible to identify cases for which the national authorities should seek the support of Eurojust or the EJN. Therefore, Eurojust believes that the way forward is not simply to define such criteria, but to clearly structure the link between Eurojust and the EJN at national level to provide adequate guidance for the national authorities concerned, while respecting the principle of the complementarity of tasks between the two bodies. To consider the possibility of joint seminars with National Members and the EJN contact points to raise awareness among practitioners on their respective tasks. It should be noted that joint seminars have been organised in the past. Both Eurojust and the EJN are committed to continue to strengthen their work relations in order to establish complementarity, clarity and certainty. This relationship was a topic for discussion in the Lisbon seminar and is part of the European Commission Communication as well as the proposals on the future of Eurojust and the EJN see Chapter 6.
F presented with a cancer diagnosis, would you know what to do? Where would you turn for guidance to make the necessary decisions for treatment and, one hopes, recovery? According to the National Cancer Institute, one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer in his lifetime, for most, a terrifying moment. A common reaction is shock and disbelief, making it difficult to comprehend or process information from the doctor. Lack of information and understanding of medical jargon are only two obstacles to patient care, however. A cancer patient is thrown into the medical web of navigating appointments for blood work, biopsies, scans, chemotherapy, radiation, seed implants, transfusions and on and on. The process can be overwhelming. Add to that the daily demands of work, family and the overlooked psychological process of coping with a life-threatening illness. It quickly becomes apparent that these patients need support and guidance. From coast to coast, cancer centers are finally acknowledging the extreme stresses that cancer patients face and are working to bridge the gaps in care and communication through patient advocacy programs. Many cancer centers in the United States have added patient advocates to their staffs. In a majority of hospital oncology departments, new admissions are greeted by an oncology social worker who works with the patient and family to explain the hospitalization process and address their needs. Most cancer patients are not hospitalized, however, and many centers do not provide social workers for patients treated in an ambulatory setting. Even if a patient is receiving radiation or chemotherapy in a separate area of the hospital, there is usually no one to provide assistance. Two of the country's comprehensive cancer centers committed to offering premier cancer care have filled this need by providing patient advocates for both inpatient and outpatient cancer patients. Richard DuBois, a bodybuilder whose brawny physique landed him parts in 1950s movies and Mae West's stage act, died Wednesday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 74. DuBois' wife, Gladys DuBois, said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death. The winner of Mr. America and the Mr. USA bodybuilding contests in the mid 1950s, DuBois landed a contract with mgM and a role in the 1954 movie "Athena" with Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell. He appeared in the musical comedy under the stage name Richard Sabre. He later appeared with Mae West in her nightclub act as it toured across the country. DuBois eventually abandoned show business to become an evangelist, his wife said. He spent the last 19 years preaching as pastor of Gospel Lighthouse in West Los Angeles. Helen Elaine Freeman, known as "the Jane Goodall of snow leopards" for her advocacy on behalf of the increasingly rare central Asian big cats, died Thursday in Seattle of lung disease. She was 75. Her death was announced by the International Snow Leopard Trust, which she founded in 1981 after becoming fascinated with two of the creatures at a zoo. Freeman traveled to Asia, Europe and around the United States to drum up support for protecting the endangered cats in their native habitat. Her interest in snow leopards began with Nicholas and Alexandra, obtained from the Soviet Union in 1972, while she was working as a volunteer docent at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Freeman earned a degree in animal behavior at the University of Washington, then helped design a program that overcame problems for zoos in getting snow leopards to breed in captivity. Nicholas and Alexandra produced 29 cubs. Wolfgang K.H. Panofsky, an internationally admired physicist who devoted much of his life to promoting nuclear arms control, has died. He was 88. Panofsky, affectionally known as "Pief, " had a heart attack Monday in Los Altos, Calif., Stanford University officials said. Panofsky won the National Medal of Science in 1969 and the U.S. Department of Energy's Enrico Fermi Award in 1979, and he played a key role in shaping the government's science and nuclear policies. Panofsky was born in Berlin on April 24, 1919, the son of prominent art historian Erwin Panofsky. He showed scientific promise at an early age and later attended Princeton University. He received his doctorate in 1942 from the California Institute of Technology. At first classified as an "enemy alien" under California's wartime enemy exclusion law, he soon became a naturalized citizen and worked from 1943 to 1945 as a consultant on the Manhattan Project, which produced the atomic bomb. Later, at Stanford, his work ultimately led to congressional authorization of the 2-mile-long electron linear accelerator at the heart of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, in 1961. Three Nobel prizes emerged from research promoted by Panofsky over the more than two decades he was lab director. He was a tireless adviser to presidents Eisenhower through Carter and important figures in their administrations on issues of international security. George Rieveschl, inventor of the antihistamine Benadryl, died Thursday in Cincinnati. He was 91. Rieveschl was a professor emeritus of environmental engineering at the University of Cincinnati. Benadryl is commonly used to treat allergy symptoms such as hay fever, rashes and hives. Rieveschl was a chemical engineering professor at UC when he found that his two-part compound -- originally tested to improve muscle-relaxing medications -- blocked histamine. Histamine is a chemical released in the body that causes the swelling, watery eyes and runny noses common in allergic reactions. Parke, Davis and Co. -- now part of Pfizer Inc. -- started marketing Benadryl in May 1946. It is now sold over the counter under the Benadryl brand name and its generic name, diphenhydramine hydrochloride. Rabbi Avraham Shapira, a spiritual leader of Israel's religious Zionist movement, has died after a long illness. He was 94. Shapira, a chief rabbi in Israel for 10 years beginning in 1983, died Thursday in Jerusalem after being hospitalized earlier in the week, his family said. Thousands of his followers had prayed for his well-being in recent days at the Western Wall, the holiest Jewish site in Jerusalem's Old City.
