Distribution Ecology Curcuma longa is native to India and Sri Lanka, where it is cultivated on a considerable scale. It has been introduced and become naturalized and cultivated in Haiti and Jamaica and elsewhere in the West Indies. Since it is naturally a plant of the open forests, partial or intermittent shade is desirable for high yields, especially in warm and moist conditions 3 ; . Active Principles The major colouring principles are the curcuminoids, mainly a mixture of curcumin and its derivatives dicinnamoylmethane compounds ; present at 3%-5% in the rhizome spice ; . They are responsible for its use as a colourant, a major ingredient of curry powders and pastes, and in mustard pickles, like piccalilli 3, 4, 5, ; . Parts Used Key Uses The rhizome is used also in cosmetic preparations, topically to treat acne and other skin conditions. It also has fungicidal and insecticidal properties. The younger shoots and young rhizomes can be eaten fresh as a spicy vegetable 3, 5 ; . Traditionally, turmeric has been used medicinally to treat a range of conditions such as pain and inflammation, peptic ulcers, haemorrhages, bruises, colic and menstrual difficulties. Therapeutic indications include symptomatic treatment of mild digestive disturbances and minor biliary dysfunction 2, 4 ; . The dried rhizome is known officially as Rhizoma Curcumae Longae, an aromatic bitter-tasting drug, characterized in the pharmacopoeias, as containing not less than 4% volatile oil, and not less than 3% curcuminoid constituents. The use of this herbal drug to treat acid, flatulent, or atonic dyspepsia has been validated by clinical data; and, an oral infusion of up to one gram taken thrice daily is recommended 2 ; . Turmeric essential ; oil and turmeric oleoresin extract ; find similar applications as the ground rhizome spice ; 3 ; and increasingly as anti-oxidants, in nutraceuticals and functional foods. Quality, safety, efficacy and regulatory framework With respect to turmeric as the spice of international and retail trade, acceptance of the dried rhizome is basically determined by its general appearance, and the organoleptic properties of its volatile essential oil. CAUTION: In some local markets, ground turmeric rhizome is found to be adulterated with lead chromate, yellow earth, sand or cheap talc 3 ; . Qualitative and quantitive analyses are carried out on turmeric for total curcuminoids, as well as microscopic and purity and other identity tests. The chemical composition is variable, depending on the cultivar and the cultivation practices used 3 ; . No toxic effects have been reported in taking Rhizoma Curcumae Longae as a drug 4 ; . Its efficacy as an anti-inflammatory and free radical-scavenging agent has been supported by laboratory experiments 2 ; . It contra-indicated in cases of biliary obstruction. The yellow essential oil derived from turmeric is composed mainly of a number of.

Claimant testified that he did not recall having any troubles with his left knee before the October 21, 2003, injury. Claimant acknowledged that his family physician, Dr. Wilson, is located at the McCrory Family Clinic. Claimant testified that he had no recollection of registering complaints regarding his left leg in October 2002, nor did claimant recall being seen at the McCrory Family Clinic on November 13, 2001, with complaints of left knee pain. While the notes of the clinic reflects visits of the claimant for left knee pain dating back as early as October 1998, and April 1999, claimant maintains that the only thing Dr. Wilson ever did on his left side was to inject his left elbow. After having been provided an opportunity to review the clinic notes, claimant responded: Well, I'm not gong to deny that this is a fax page from McCrory, but again, I do not ever recall ever having Dr. Wilson look at my left knee for anything. T. 32 ; . The testimony of the claimant reflects that he has not seen Dr. Wilson in a couple of years, however if he needed to see a general practitioner doctor for something he would probably to the McCrory Family Clinic. The testimony of the claimant reflects that he was last seen by a physician, Dr. Cooper, regarding his left knee approximately six 6 ; months ago, in 2007. The record reflects the presence of a July 19, 2007, report of Dr. Cooper. Claimant estimates that he continued to receive medical treatment relative to his left knee under the care of Dr. Cooper following the October 21, 2003, injury, every three to four months, in the form of injection, until March 2006. Claimant's testimony reflects that he was able to do his job. Claimant noted that the intensity of his pain became greater following the March 8, 2006, accident. Claimant went to New Orleans on four 4 ; separate occasions providing help in the 8. Long-term T-cell reconstitution after hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation in primary T-cellimmunodeficient patients is associated with myeloid chimerism and possibly the primary disease phenotype. Blood, 109 10 ; , 4575-4581, 2007 ; Facteur d'Impact 2006 : 10, 370 ; Services cits : Biothrapie, Immuno-Hmatologie-Rhumatologie Pdiatriques, U768, HistoEmbryologie - Cytogntique, Laboratoire d'Immunologie, Biostatistique ; We studied T-cell reconstitution in 31 primary T-cell-immunodeficient patients who had undergone hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation HSCT ; over 10 years previously. In 19 patients, there was no evidence of myeloid chimerism because little or no myeloablation had been performed. Given this context, we sought factors associated with good long-term T-cell reconstitution. We found that all patients having undergone full myeloablation had donor myeloid cells and persistent thymopoiesis, as evidenced by the presence of naive T cells carrying T-cell receptor excision circles TRECs ; . In 9 patients with host myeloid chimerism, sustained thymic output was also observed and appeared to be associated with gammac deficiency. It is therefore possible that the complete absence of thymic progenitors characterizing this condition created a more favorable environment for thymic seeding by a population of early progenitor cells with the potential for self-renewal, thus enabling long-term 10 years ; T-cell production and mevacor.

The scheme for Quality Development has been introduced to develop and ensure appropriate standard in exports and to meet the quality of the produce as per the international standards. Setting up quality testing labs Adoption of quality systems like HACCP, ISO, EurepGAP etc. Testing of products to ensure importing countries requirements of product standards, pesticide residue levels etc. Nearly Rs. 213.90 million has been disbursed under this scheme for quality control development, which is 16% of the total amount disbursed. APEDA has accredited, recognized and upgraded laboratory facilities for testing of agro produce for exports. There are 6 laboratories upgraded and recognized in public sector and 7 private labs upgraded and recognized. APEDA has recognized 4 consultants and 1 certification agency for HACCP certification. HACCP standards have been implemented in over 125 manufacturing units of food products. Training programmes for analysts, Agmark and extension officers and farmers have been arranged. APEDA carries out the recognition of the exporter's units for certification of "Quality Produce of India" in the processing units of: Fresh fruits and vegetables Floriculture etc.
Mental health risks Alcohol related brain damage ARBD ; ARBD refers to a spectrum of disorders that result in changes to the structure and function of the brain. There is a lack of robust epidemiological data on the prevalence and incidence of ARBD which relates in part to the lack of standardised diagnostic and assessment tools12. Scottish studies have found high prevalence in hospital admissions in the East End of Glasgow13 and in psychiatric patients resident in Scottish mental hospitals14 There is also evidence of marked regional variations with rates higher in the West of Scotland particularly Glasgow and Argyll and Clyde. The lower than expected male to female ratio, combined with trend data showing women are presenting with the syndrome at an earlier age, suggests that women are at greater risk of developing this syndrome. A recent report of an expert working group on ARBD12 gave a much higher prevalence of 7 cases per 10, 000 in Argyll & Clyde compared with 4 per 10, 000 in Glasgow but this could reflect differences in rates of detection. Most recently, a study in Glasgow15found that 78% of a sample of homeless hostel dwellers were drinking hazardously, 61% met the criteria for lifelong alcohol dependence and 21% had been diagnosed with ARBD. Mental health problems There is a strong link between alcohol and mental health problems but there has been little research in Scotland or the rest of the UK. A recent report from an expert working group on co-occurring substance misuse and mental health problems in Scotland estimated that about 1 in 2 patients with alcohol problems also have mental health problems and 2 in 5 people with mental health problems may also have a drug or alcohol problem16. The underlying reasons why people use alcohol is explored in the Mental Health Foundation report, `Cheers?', and suggest that many people in the UK `self medicate with alcohol to help them cope with emotions or situations.
